What to do and not do during your relocation

It hardly matters whether you are a first-time mover or have a couple of relocation experiences; there are lessons to be learnt in every move. These days, there are plenty of choices by which you could relocate. For example, you might decide to shift in phases – keeping your goods in self-storage and taking them gradually over time. Or you might just decide to shift in one go. You might decide to go for self-moving or hire the services of a professional mover. Whichever way you decide to move, there are several things which you need to do as well as not do during relocation. Here is a list of such things:

Must do:

* There is no dearth of moving companies, all of them offering more or less the same kind of services. But their rates differ. So you have to look around and do some thorough research before you finalize the deal. Yellow pages, friend referrals as well as online search can give you a host of names of storage companies, local moving companies, national movers and more.

* Look for moving companies who are willing to work within your budget and moving schedule. Check their punctuality and customer claim records from customer endorsements as well as BBB records.

* Relocation does not only involve taking moving boxes from one city to another. Check with the moving company, if they are willing to help you with packing and loading.

* Some moving companies also help customers to unload and unpack. Check out these facilities and then work out a bargain price with the moving company.

Must Never Do:

* No relocation can be successful if done in a rush and in an unplanned manner. This does not mean that people who are in a hurry are not moving in and out of a city! But remember any rushed move can result in goods getting misplaced, broken or damaged in transit. At the end of the day, you would be busy filing claims and counterclaims rather than getting occupied with settling down in your new home. Of course a relocation poorly executed, can be an extremely expensive and traumatic experience.

* A successful move takes close to two months, including planning, packing and loading.

* Do not attempt at self-moving unless you are physically fit, can take on strenuous labor and have previous experience in packing, loading, unloading, using loading machinery, etc. There are enough people around, who have professional expertise in such fields. To make your relocation as much stress-free as possible, take it easy and merely supervise the work rather than getting your hands in every pie.

Don't:

Don't do it yourself. Packing carefully is important and most movers have years of experience organizing and boxing. Take advantage of their skills and your time spent moving will be more of a breeze and less of a headache.
